Acne

Acne is perhaps the most common skin condition affecting people of all ages, most commonly people in their teens and twenties.

It is characterised by a combination of pimples, blackheads ( comedomes ) and red lumps ( papules )

According to dermatology experts, acne is caused by the over production of androgens, hormones that are present in the body. Androgens most commonly increase during puberty, stimulating the sebaceous glands in the skin. When the sebaceous glands become blocked by oil and cell debris it can lead to a perfect breeding ground for the P. Acne bacteria to multiply inside the blocked follicle. These bacteria produce chemicals and enzymes that cause inflammation, redness, swelling and tenderness, that are commonly associated with the acne lesions.

There are different categories of Acne, ranging from mild to the more severe form of Cystic Acne.

Acne can occur on the face, neck, chest, back and shoulders. While both males and females can suffer from acne, research shows that the condition is usually more severe in males. Genes play an important role, making some people more genetically predisposed to outbreaks than others. Other factors that effect acne breakouts include the use of cosmetics containing oil, environmental pollution, humidity, and drugs including androgens and barbiturates.

If you have acne you should be assessed by your GP as this is a medical condition and in the more severe forms will require medical based intervention.
